First confirm what was reported

Compare the month and status on the credit report with the due date, grace period, statement, confirmation number, and bank record. A payment being made does not automatically prove it was received by the due date.

  • Save the relevant statement.
  • Locate bank or payment-processor confirmation.
  • Check for returned or reversed payments.

Describe one verifiable error

A useful dispute identifies the exact month, the status being challenged, what you believe is correct, and the documents supporting that conclusion. Avoid generic claims or requests to delete accurate history.

  • State facts in chronological order.
  • Ask for a specific correction.
  • Dispute with the reporting company and information furnisher when appropriate.

Track the response

Credit reporting companies generally investigate within 30 days, with some investigations taking up to 45 days. Preserve proof of delivery and review the written result against the original item.
