Most negative account information has a general seven-year period

Credit reporting companies can generally report negative account payment history for up to seven years. Bankruptcy information can remain for up to ten years. The starting point and exceptions depend on the information involved.

Accurate does not mean permanent, and negative does not mean inaccurate

A dispute process is for information that is inaccurate, incomplete, or otherwise legally reportable incorrectly. It is not a tool for deleting truthful information before its reporting period ends.

Build forward while monitoring accuracy

Pay obligations on time, keep revolving balances low relative to limits, avoid unnecessary applications, and review reports for factual errors. Time and consistent management matter more than quick-fix promises.

Official sources

Review the current government sources before acting because requirements and contact information can change.
